Running Log – Green Thumb 2010
My 2nd Half Marathon is now completed and one would think you would get faster and stronger as you go on but I finished approximately 15 mins slower then last time. If you had asked my last week what my goal time was in my mind it was to beat my previous time while trying to take a shot at getting under 2 hours. This morning after getting 2 hours of sleep I was convinced I wouldn’t even run. I sat down and listened to some inspirational music, looked over a few quotes like this one…
“The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win.” ~ Roger Bannister
Then I remember what Tony Horton said in his P90x video’s that I watched over and over. These words carried me for the entire race…
“Try your best and forget the rest” – Tony Horton
My goal once I was in the race was to just do my best. The course looped past the start point 3 times at which I could pull out at any time. Each time I asked myself if I could keep going was I giving it my best and found it inside me to keep going, keep pushing, keep trying.
So let’s go back for a second and explain why I only had 2 hours of sleep and the most important lesson I have learned. On Thursday my new Half Marathon group decided to do strength training instead of running. The exercises were good but I over did it and did not stretch prior to starting. A week before race day I would not suggest doing any stairs, box jumps, burpys or anything high impact. Actually I would suggest just taking the whole week off which is exactly what I am going to do for the next one. I had to learn it the hard way and learn it I have.
Have you ever over trained? What was the results for you on race day?
